THE WORD: LOGOS

A CHALLENGE

Matthew 4:1-11 "1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him."

THE LOGOS

John 1:1-5 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

There are 4 words for “Word” in greek. 

G518 - ἀπαγγέλλω - Apaggellō - verb. To “show, tell, report or declare”
G3050 - λογικός - logikos - reasonable, of the word
G4487 - ῥῆμα - rhēma - that which is or has been uttered by the living voice, thing spoken, word
G3056 - λόγος - logos - word, saying, account, speech, Word (Christ), thing, misc

Logos is the word used here in John 1:1-5

THE LOGOS IS THE FULL COUNSEL

Matthew 4:1-11 [Earlier example]

FULL COUNSEL OF THE WORD OF GOD. 

2 Peter 1:20 "Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things."

THE LOGOS IS THE WHY

Matthew 5:32 "But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause G3056 of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery."

THE LOGOS IS THE HOW

Matthew 8:8 "The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word G3056 only, and my servant shall be healed."

THE LOGOS IS IS WHAT YOU RECEIVE 

Acts 2:41 "Then they that gladly received his word G3056 were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls."

THE LOGOS IS THE ACCOUNT WE GIVE

Matthew 12:36 "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account G3056 thereof in the day of judgment"

- Our account is Jesus

WE CAN MAKE THE LOGOS OF NO EFFECT

Mark 7:13 "Making the word G3056 of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye."

Sobering. 

THE LOGOS IS ETERNAL

Mark 13:31 "Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words G3056 shall not pass away."

THE LOGOS IS LIVING AND ACTIVE 

Hebrews 4:12-13 “12For the word G3056 of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

THE LOGOS IS TO BE RIGHTLY DIVIDED

2 Timothy 2:15 "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word G3056 of truth."

THE LOGOS IS A SEED TO BE SOWN 

Mark 4:14 The sower soweth the word. G3056

THE LOGOS IS THE REPUTATION 

Luke 5:15 "But so much the more went there a fame G3056 abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities."
/Luke 7:17 "And this rumour G3056 of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about."

THE LOGOS IS TO BE OBEYED AND THIS BRINGS BLESSING

Luke 11:28 "But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word G3056 of God, and keep it."

THE LOGOS IS JESUS

John 1:14 "And the Word G3056 was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."
/Revelation 19:13 "And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word G3056 of God."

THE LOGOS IS TO BE CONTINUED IN

John. 8:31 "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, G3056 then are ye my disciples indeed;"

THE LOGOS IS PROOF OF LOVE

John 14:24 "He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: G3056 and the word G3056 which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me."

THE LOGOS CLEANS

John 15:3 "Now ye are clean through the word G3056 which I have spoken unto you."

THE LOGOS IS TRUTH

John 17:17 "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word G3056 is truth. "

THE LOGOS INCREASES

Acts 6:7 "And the word G3056 of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith."

THE LOGOS IS TO BE PREACHED. IT IS NOT A FASHION TREND IN AND OUT OF SEASON. 

2 Ti 4:2 "Preach the word; G3056 be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine."

THE FOUNDATIONS ARE THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE LOGOS

Hebrews 6:1-2 "Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine G3056 of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment."
